CHALLENGE

As one of Hawaii’s leading financial institutions, First Hawaiian Bank sought to present its 2022 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report in a way that reflected both its corporate responsibility and deep-rooted commitment to the communities it serves. The report needed to go beyond facts and figures — it had to embody the values of stewardship, resilience, and place.

sOLUTION

Refinery Creative partnered with First Hawaiian Bank to bring intention and clarity to the design of its ESG Report. Drawing from the bank’s values and the spirit of Hawai‘i, we developed a refined visual system that elevated the report’s storytelling while remaining grounded in accessibility and professionalism.

Key design elements included:

  • Symbolic cover artwork – Featuring the nēnē goose, an endemic species and symbolic protector of Hawai‘i, the cover conveys a sense of kuleana (responsibility) and connection to place.

  • Thoughtful visual identity – A cohesive color palette, typography, and layout system that struck a balance between modernity and approachability, supporting readability across print and digital formats.

  • Clear, structured storytelling – Elegant typographic hierarchy and intuitive page design helped organize the report’s ESG highlights, achievements, and forward-looking goals in an engaging, digestible way.

RESULTS

The 2022 ESG Report served as a confident visual expression of First Hawaiian Bank’s values-driven mission. The design approach brought clarity and purpose to the reporting, reinforcing the bank’s reputation as a trusted, community-minded leader — and setting a thoughtful visual precedent for future reports.

With this report, First Hawaiian Bank demonstrated that environmental and social responsibility aren’t just measured — they’re embodied in the details.
